Freedom behind the wheel: why the right car setup matters for wheelchair users.

Freedom behind the wheel: why the right car setup matters for wheelchair users.

As a wheelchair user, having the right vehicle features has completely transformed my driving experience. I'm Gem, and today I'm sharing the essential features that enable me to drive with confidence and independence.

Over the years, I have been lucky enough to test many car features, and now I have finally found the correct setup for me.

Keyless entry: one less hassle.

Keyless entry is one of those features you don't realise you need until you have it. With a simple touch of the handle, my car automatically unlocks. This convenience might seem small, but it eliminates one of those frustrating moments. No more fumbling for keys, especially when my hands are full.

Electric seats: customised comfort and control.

Electric seats are a game-changer for me as a disabled driver. With the push of a button, I can adjust my seat to the exact height and position I need, without the physical effort required by manual seats.

I also love having memory seat settings. I’ve saved my ideal driving position and a setting as low as possible that helps with transfers. Being able to switch instantly between positions makes a huge difference to my comfort and independence.

Tailored driving controls.

I have several features on my car that allow me to drive with freedom and confidence.

Push-pull accelerator and brake: This system allows me to control acceleration and braking entirely with my hands, eliminating the need to use foot pedals. It's intuitive once you get used to it, pull to go, push to stop.

Indicator switch: My hand controls include an indicator switch within easy reach, allowing me to signal turns with the push of a button.

Foldaway accelerator pedal: This feature prevents my feet from accidentally pressing the pedal, providing an extra layer of safety and peace of mind whilst driving.

Quick-release steering ball: The steering ball (or spinner knob) mounted on my steering wheel enables me to steer with one hand, freeing up the other for controls. The quick-release feature gives me flexibility to remove it when needed.

Automatic tailgate: effortless boot access.

Reaching and closing a boot from a wheelchair can be extremely difficult, as I’m so low to the ground.  An automatic tailgate solves this entirely. With the push of a button, the tailgate opens and closes on its own. I can open and close the boot independently, without needing help from anyone else.

Ample boot space: accommodating your wheelchair.

Having enough boot space to fit my wheelchair in one piece is amazing. Sometimes I don’t want to disassemble my chair, especially when I’m travelling with someone else. A spacious boot allows me to store my wheelchair whole, making trips quicker and far more convenient.

Finding your perfect setup.

For me, finding the right car setup has made driving comfortable, safe, and empowering. Every wheelchair user’s needs are unique, and what works for me might be different from what works for you.

Some of these features are adaptive technologies, and some are available on standard cars. The key is understanding which features will best support your driving style and physical requirements. When it’s time to choose your next car, keeping these features in mind can help make your driving experience a bit easier as a wheelchair user.
