Quick energy boost for wheelchair users - 10-minute reset trick.

Feeling drained? Try this quick reset for wheelchair users.

Being a wheelchair user can drain your energy, especially as the day wears on. I'm always on the lookout for quick and effective ways to recharge, and I've recently discovered a simple yet powerful practice: Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR). This technique, popularized by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, is a game-changer for regaining mental clarity and physical energy, particularly during the dreaded "afternoon slump."

What is non-sleep deep rest (NSDR)?

NSDR encompasses a variety of practices designed to guide your brain and body into a state of deep relaxation without actually falling asleep. One of the most accessible forms of NSDR is yoga nidra, often referred to as "yogic sleep." As wheelchair users, we often carry tension in different parts of our bodies due to prolonged sitting or the physical effort involved in mobility. NSDR can help you release this tension through guided meditation or a body scan while lying down, providing a quick energy reset.

Why NSDR works for wheelchair users.

What makes NSDR so effective for us? Research shows that a 10-20 minute session can replenish physical energy and enhance cognitive function. Unlike a regular nap, NSDR has the added benefit of increasing striatal dopamine levels in the brain, which boosts mood and motivation—something we can all use. It also improves your ability to relax on command, leading to better sleep quality, which is essential for managing the physical demands of wheelchair use.

How to practice NSDR for a quick reset.

To try this 10-minute reset trick, find a quiet, comfortable space where you can either lie down or sit back. Close your eyes, take slow, deep breaths, and focus on each part of your body, consciously releasing any tension. There are plenty of guided NSDR or yoga nidra sessions available online if you prefer some guidance. You can listen to Andrew's 10 minute version on Spotify below, and there is also a 20min version if you'd like to go deeper.

The benefits you'll feel.

In just a short time, you'll feel a noticeable boost in energy and mental clarity, ready to tackle the rest of your day with renewed vigor. Give it a try—you might be surprised at how much this simple practice can transform your daily routine.
