A paraplegic's guide to seamless car transfers with a wheelchair.

A paraplegic's guide to seamless car transfers with a wheelchair.

As a paraplegic, transferring in and out of a vehicle is one of the most crucial daily tasks for maintaining my independence. The process of getting myself into your wheelchair safely can be exhausting and difficult.

In this guide, I'll share the techniques and considerations that help me achieve smooth, efficient car transfers.

Making the transfer

I position my chair as close as possible to the car, aligning it parallel to the door with the front wheels facing forward. This reduces distance and simplifies pivoting. I then make the transfer into the car and bring my legs in.

Preparing the wheelchair

I start by taking my cushion off and folding the seat and side guards of my chair.

I then flip the wheelchair right over. I have found it easier to position and lift into my car this way. But the downside is the scratches on the front of the chair.

Transferring the wheelchair

I disconnect my wheels one at a time and put them into the footwell of the front seat. I then lift my wheelchair frame. I often reach around the back of the car seat with my left hand to help with balance and core strength. I find this helps to stabilise the transfer.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Success

The right vehicle setup can dramatically reduce strain and increase safety.

Helpful vehicle features include:

  • Wide door openings
  • Seats that adjust up or down to match transfer height
  • Grab handles or support bar
  • Low to the ground body

These features can make the difference between an exhausting struggle and an easier transfer. Check out our other post for more information on the features of my car that help me as a paraplegic driver.

Every paraplegic’s experience is unique. What works for us may not work for you, and that’s okay. With persistence, experimentation, and the right support, you can find the methods and tools that empower your independence.
